IUC – Sole Vehicle Tax The Portuguese Government introduced the IUC (Imposto Unico de Circulação), which replaces the old Car Tax Stamp, The Vehicle Tax and The Lorry Tax. All vehicles purchased from 1st July 2007 will automatically pay this new tax within 30 days of its registration and all the other vehicles from 1st January 2008. With this new regime, the vehicle tax will be spread through the entire life of the car, instead all at once at the time of purchase. However, the vehicles that were bought before July 2007 have already paid the vehicle tax; therefore 2 tables will be considered in the calculation of the new IUC as below. The IUC will be paid every year on the registration date, through Internet or at any Fiscal Desk. The proof of payment does not any longer need to be displayed on the windscreen as the old stamp did. Disabled people with a disability equal to or greater than 60% are exempt of IUC but only to one vehicle per owner. The disability must be certified by a Junta Medica declaration.
